If you are wondering why some of the people involved in the final season are a bit vague about its ending, it’s because the final episode had multiple endings–each filmed by the cast. The producers are keeping the real ending under lock and key so it does not get out to the public about how it ends in advance. In previous interviews, Sam Heughan and Sophie Skelton have addressed not knowing how it ends. I’m sure by now, Sam does know, seeing as he and Caitriona Balfe are executive producers. When the rest of the cast will be clued in about the real ending remains to be seen. Considering the season premieres this week, it is possible the ending will be revealed to those involved in the finale.
Matthew B. Roberts spoke with People about the multiple endings:
“There’s a small handful of people that have seen it all the way through,” he shared. “I think keeping it close to the vest and a surprise to a lot of people made it a little more special.”
“What we tried to do is answer as many questions as we could authentically,” Roberts added. “There’s so many great storylines that get tied up — whether it’s in a tight bow or a very loose bow, that’s for the fans to judge.”
“They all could have been the ending, and that’s why people believed them,” he noted.
Caitriona Balfe is also quoted in the same article:
“I am as curious and in anticipation of seeing the rest of the season as everyone else will be,” she said.
Sophie Skelton commented on Brianna’s ending:
“Brianna’s at peace, and that makes me very happy,” Skelton said.
And David Berry spoke on Lord John’s end:
David Berry also teased the concluding storyline of his character, Lord John Grey: “Something I get asked a lot is, ‘Will John find love of his own?’ I think this season will address that head on.”
“Lord John’s story ends in a place that I’m very happy with,” he continued.
